Nightmare of September 29, 2020
She touched her body where they had hurt herAs if it no longer belonged to her,The flesh entrusted to her dirtied now Beyond any hope of accounting it hers— Property condemned. I offered my hand. She rejected it, covering her shameWith a stare no man could ever deflectWithout tasting his own sour spittleHis gorge upheaving with corrosive bile. Then she groped for her knife, blade hot starlight,And rammed it in the throat of the giant bullWhich had begun to dance in the field beside us.When it dropped she started gulping its bloodSpurting from the throat glistening with fat.Everywhere spewing blood, her wild eyes glaring,She dared me to pity their ruins of bodiesAs she turned to enter the carcass alone. Her ghastly wail summoned the poachers backAs if they knew the rape must be repeated,But soon they were melting in the boiling bloodAs new made she herded them toward the stoneWhere she had been once human and beautiful. In the stillness fire erupted all around her,But she drank it, too, along with their juices,As I waked in the dark which was now our home,My heart in my throat, my teeth and hands clenched,Knowing without knowing the wretch defined us,Inside us, as inside her, we despoil it allIn the name of gods, created by hate,Who uncreate the human beautiful.
